Connect

Connect Membrane to ChatGPT

A few more steps than Claude — you'll enable Developer Mode first, then create a connector. Still only takes three or four minutes.

Eligible plans
Custom connectors are available on Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu plans. The free ChatGPT tier does not support custom connectors today. If you're on a free plan, consider connecting Claude.ai instead — it allows one connector on the free tier.

Step by step

Enable Developer Mode, then add Membrane

  1. Open ChatGPT settings

In ChatGPT, click the settings icon (usually bottom-left near your profile) and open the Settings panel.
  2. Go to Apps & Connectors

Choose Apps & Connectors from the Settings sidebar. You'll see OpenAI's built-in connectors listed here.
  3. Open Advanced settings and enable Developer Mode

    One-time

At the bottom of the Apps & Connectors page, open Advanced settings. Toggle Developer Mode on.

Developer Mode is what lets ChatGPT connect to custom servers like Membrane. You only have to enable it once.

  4. Head back to Apps & Connectors

Use the back arrow or sidebar to return to the main Apps & Connectors page. You'll now see a Create button.
  5. Click 'Create'

Select Create. A form opens where you give your custom connector a name and point it at the Membrane URL.
  6. Fill in the connector details

    Key step
    • Name: Membrane
    • Description: something short — e.g., “Membrane campaign management”
    • URL: https://mcp.nfthing.com/mcp

Agree to the connector terms checkbox, then click Create.

  7. Sign in with email + one-time code

ChatGPT redirects to the Membrane sign-in page. Enter your email, get the 6-digit code, submit it. You'll land back on the connector page with Membrane now active.
  8. Turn Membrane on in your chat

Open any chat. Click the + button in the message area → More → select Membrane. You're ready. Try: “Create a text survey about our new packaging.”
You're connected

Now just describe what you want to create.

ChatGPT now has access to all the Membrane tools. You don't need to remember any of them — just talk naturally about the campaign you want to run.

If something doesn't go to plan

I can't find Developer Mode

It lives in Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings. If you don't see the Advanced section, you're likely on a plan that doesn't support custom connectors (ChatGPT Free). Upgrade to Pro or Team, or connect Claude.ai instead.

The 'Create' button isn't there

That usually means Developer Mode isn't on yet. Go back to Advanced settings, confirm the toggle is enabled, refresh the page, and the Create button should appear.

The sign-in page didn't open

Common fixes:

  • Unblock pop-ups for chat.openai.com.
  • Double-check the URL is exactly https://mcp.nfthing.com/mcp (HTTPS, no trailing slash).
  • Delete the connector and redo the Create step from scratch.
My OTP code didn't arrive

Check spam, then request a new one. OTPs are valid for about 10 minutes. If it still doesn't show up after a fresh request, email support@nfthing.com.

ChatGPT says Membrane tools aren't available in this chat

You need to select Membrane per chat. Click the + in the message area → More Membrane. You can verify by asking “What Membrane tools do you have?” — ChatGPT will list them.

My session expired and I need to sign in again

Membrane keeps you signed in for a week of inactivity. After that, ChatGPT will prompt you to sign in again through the same email-OTP flow. The connector itself stays — you don't need to recreate it.
